SPARC receives anonymous donation at Senate

Student Senate presented a check from an anonymous alumni group to SPARC at its meeting Tuesday afternoon.

The check for SPARC, Students Promoting Awareness, Responsibility, and Citizenship, was written for $12,810. Assistant Director of Leadership Stella Mulberry explained that the alumni wanted to help SPARC with the community service projects they are sponsoring.

The alumni also wanted to show the student association that they support their leadership and the accomplishments they are achieving, added Student Senate President Taylor Russ.

“The most important message from the alum[s] is that they care about us,” said Russ.

In other business, Student Senate passed a resolution insisting that administration stop charging graduating students $40 for a processing fee. Senate will wait for a response from administration and discuss the matter in future meetings.

Senate approved a positive recommendation from the finance committee to fund Students for a Better Society, the Environmental Society and the Senate Environment Committee $263 for Earth Day awareness events taking place the week before Earth Day.

The event is from Monday, April 16 through Friday, April 20. Tuesday through Thursday tables will be set up at the Flagpole with information on various types of pollution, recycling programs and alternate energy sources. On Friday, Mayor Laura Miller will be speaking in Smith Auditorium.

Student Senate also approved a positive recommendation from the Organizations Committee to give the Bhakti Yoga Club and KPNI SMU Radio full charter. The Wakeboarding Club and SMMUG (Southern Methodist Mac User Group) will be up for full charter at the next Senate Meeting.

Kyle Bennett was sworn in as the Diversity Chair Tuesday afternoon. He will serve as the Diversity Chair until the next school year’s inauguration.
