SMU baseball had another tough weekend, ending the season with a three-game series loss to Texas Tech in Lubbock. The series started with the Mustangs keeping the score at 0-0 in the first inning, but Tech quickly raised the score to 13-0 in the second inning.
Unable to compete against the Tech lineup, the Mustangs gave up two more runs in the third inning and another one in the fourth inning, ending the game at 16-0.
Game two in the series paralleled the first game with Tech running up the score by two runs in the first inning, five in the second, and one in the third. The Mustangs were able to answer back in the fourth inning with runs by Jordan Hofeditz and Ryan Davis, but were faced with another run from Tech in the fourth.
Ryan Yarbrough and Wade Muldoon also brought in runs for SMU in the fifth and sixth innings, making the score 9-4. Tech brought in one run in the fifth to match Yarbrough, and later went on to score four in the sixth inning, leaving the Mustangs with another loss of 14-4.
In the final game of the series the Mustangs started strong, only allowing one run in the first inning. The score remained at 0-0 until the fifth, when Tech scored four runs. SMU responded with a run by Perry McKnight in the sixth, but the Mustang defense could not compete with Tech’s lineup and gave up six runs in the seventh inning, leaving the Mustangs with their third loss of 1-11.
“Although our standings don’t necessarily reveal it, we played a lot of good baseball and could hang with a lot of tough teams like Baylor and Tech,” said team manager, Kara Maiella.
“I am so proud of everything these boys have accomplished as a team this year. They never had negative attitudes and never quit, even during the tough games,” said head coach David Hayden. “Everywhere we went, the team got compliments about their performance and sportsmanship. I could not ask for a greater group of guys to work with this season.”
“SMU baseball is most definitely back, and I can’t be more proud of the team we put on the field this season. Next season all the pieces should fall into place, and I think we’re going to play a lot of exciting baseball,” said Maiella.
