SMU has been recycling since 1997, however there’s much more than bottles and cans being recycled now.
The thermal energy plant at SMU has mastered using waste energy to heat the outdoor swimming pool on campus. Recycled heat is used to keep the pool warm, cutting down on costs and being more energy efficient.
Nearly six miles of piping runs throughout campus providing heating and cooling. The thermal energy plant is the heart of this piping. The plant takes energy that comes off of a chiller and uses that energy to heat the pool. Gas and water is saved in this process that cuts down on the production of steam. It is another effort by this school to keep SMU as green as possible.
