A percussionist and a yogi, one SMU sophomore is finding time to combine the two things she loves the most.
Percussion may take up most of Caroline Hamilton’s life.
She’s part of the Meadows Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble.
When she is not practicing percussion, she is teaching yoga.
“I really like to teach more than I do to practice, so I got involved almost immediately. I got in touch with Gina, the head of GX,” said SMU Sophomore Caroline Hamilton.
She has been a yoga instructor at the Dedman Recreation Center through the GX Group Fitness program on the SMU campus since her freshman year, but she has previously been an instructor throughout high school.
In order to become a yoga instructor she got her certification through Yoga Alliance.
“At the time I was 16 years old , I was the youngest certified teacher in Texas and the, one of the 3 youngest in the nation,” said Hamilton.
After finishing her freshman year at SMU she went on the SMU in Bali program trip that focuses on arts, culture, and yoga.
“For Caroline that was a great fit…to both study the drumming and percussion in Bali which is so unique and different but also study yoga at the same time and kind of deepen her, her practice,” said Director of SMU in Bali Anne Westwick.
Now Caroline is working on combining her musical skills in the yoga studio.
“As a percussionist that seems pretty close to my heart on what to do,” said Hamilton.
What her classmates think about her new series.
“I think it’s a really neat idea, especially teaching a class at 7 a.m. on a Friday morning… what people need to respond to is feeling something in their bodies that’s going right,” said SMU Sophomore Sophia Paolo.
The only challenge, trying to find the right music to make it work.
“Yoga is a good skill to have and I never know where it is going to take me in the future,” said Hamilton.
Yoga is something Caroline plans to continue for the rest of her life and plans to debut her new yoga with drumsticks series during the spring semester of 2020.
