Women’s golf places third at WAC Championships

Cross, Jones finish in top 10

After the women’s golf team had two members (sophomore Laura Cross and freshman Lacey Jones) named WAC Player of the Week in the last month, momentum was high as they traveled to Kuna, Id. for the WAC Championships.

Not surprisingly, it was Cross and Jones who led the team, as each finished within the top 10 of all contenders.

The Mustangs finished third overall in the tournament with a score of 909. Tulsa and San Jose State finished ahead of SMU with scores of 889 and 894, respectively.

In the most recent Golf World Women’s College Poll, the team was ranked 25, just behind Tulsa at 24.

While the Mustangs were pleased with a third-place finish, it was not always blue skies throughout the tourney – literally.

“It was cold and windy and we had some rain,” said head coach Todd Selders, “but I thought we handled the weather really well.”

Individually, Jones finished seventh with a total of 225, while Cross was ninth at 228, though they were not the only Mustangs to draw attention in Boise.

Cross joined fellow sophomore Jennifer Ackerson, who finished in a tie for 15th, as members of the First Team All-WAC.

Ackerson felt that Tulsa and San Jose placed first and second because they capitalized on their chances.

“They made the most of the birdie opportunities they had,” she said.

“There are a lot of birdie opportunities on this course, and not all of us took advantage of that.”

From here, the women look to keep up the hard work as they prepare for the NCAA Regionals May 5 through 7 in Lubbock, Texas.

“We’re looking to go out there and play the best we can,” Selders said.

He went on to comment that, with a team that includes four sophomores and one freshman, the future looks bright for women’s golf at SMU.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch them play the next two years.”
