SMU women’s golf team concluded the regular season with a 14th place finish in their first ACC Championship appearance.
Led by fourth-year head coach Lauren Mason, the Mustangs finished top five in eight of their 11 tournaments, with their best showing being a second-place tie at the Briars Creek Invitational in March.
Junior Mackenzie Lee was the Mustangs’ top performer in eight tournaments, including the ACC Championship. She averaged a 71.09 with 116 birdies and five top-five finishes.
Junior Emily Odwin and sophomore Celine Chen played in all eleven tournaments, averaging 72.47 and 73.22, respectively. Chen had the lowest round of the season of any Mustang, shooting a 66 at the Clemson Invitational.
Before the ACC Championship, SMU hosted 13 opponents, both in and out of the conference, at the Veritex Bank Collegiate. SMU finished at +11, placing third behind the University of Houston and Texas Tech.
The ACC Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, from April 16 through 19, marked SMU’s most difficult tournament of the season, as 12 of the competing teams were ranked in the top 50 of collegiate programs.
Lee led the Mustangs with a 19th place finish, posting a +4 score. Odwin and Chen placed 40th and 55th, while freshmen Jingan Huang and Amelie Kumar ended in 69th and 71st.
Despite only beating Notre Dame in the conference tournament, the team still has a chance to play in the NCAA Regional. Selections for the tournament will be announced on Wednesday, April 23, at noon.
