Volleyball gets Tulsa twice over weekend

The SMU volleyball team is coming off its first back-to-back wins of the conference season and look to ride that momentum into this week’s games.

But the Mustangs will come up against a Tulsa team that is even hotter than that. The Golden Hurricane have won five straight and are 6-2 in the conference and 18-5 overall.

And if the news couldn’t get any worse for the Mustangs, SMU will face Tulsa in both games this weekend.

First, SMU will travel to Oklahoma to face the Golden Hurricane in Tulsa at 7 p.m. tonight, and then return home for a 1 p.m. game against Tulsa on Sunday.

However, there is some good news for the Mustangs.

After having a slow start against Conference USA opponents, SMU is starting to pick up momentum midway through the conference schedule. Along with that, last weekend’s games saw the return of sophomore Kendra Kahanek. Even though Rachel Giubilato remains out of the lineup, the return of Kahanek adds another offensive weapon to the team.

The Mustangs also received great contribution from Kathryn Wilkerson and Caitlin Rainbird last weekend. Wilkerson and Rainbird tallied double doubles in the wins against Southern Miss and UCF.

SMU will also need to continue getting the offensive support of Natalie Peters, who led the Mustangs’ offense, hitting .378 against UCF, and defensive play from Candice Davis who continues to rack up digs.

The Mustangs will look to keep up with their winning ways tonight at Tulsa, and when they face the team again on Sunday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
