What an eventful weekend! Between the opening of fabulous hotels and the lavish parties benefiting wonderful charities, I’m exhausted. Who says the only fun to be had is at themed frat parties?
As you all should know, the Palomar Hotel on Mockingbird had it’s grand opening on Thursday night, the real start of the weekend and it was one of the most extravagant parties I’ve attended this year.
Just driving up to the massive compound, one could see the two dancers repelling down the side of the hotel’s enormous marquee. Although it may have blocked the entrance to the Valet temporarily, it was well worth it considering the fantastic performance given.
Walking into the wide-open atrium one could bump into any number of socialites and celebrities sipping on the new “it” drink and mingling among each other.
Upstairs was a city oriented fashion show sponsored by Stanley Korshak. With themes of Milan and Paris. Who could resist sitting down for a few minutes to watch gorgeous models strut down the catwalk in the most elegant gowns and funky sports-wear? Not to mention the perfect little buffet in the ballroom with filet mignon, conveniently located within thirty feet of four bars.
Downstairs just past the foyer is the infamous Central 214, Palomar’s hot spot bar. With both indoor and outdoor seating, this bar has something for everyone’s taste.
During the party, Audrey Hepburn’s “Roman Holiday” was projected on one of the exterior walls, visible only to those in the outdoor section of this incredibly chic bar. Along with inviting alcoves and comfy cushions seem to say “come sit on me”, when it’s not too terribly cold.
Inside, a warm fire is perpetually fed to keep people in close proximity warm though all hours of the night.
Overall, every aspect of the soirée, down to the little Korshak gift bags that seem to pop up everywhere, was a smashing success. Well done Palomar, it was quite a task living up to everyone’s expectations, but you did it!
On another note, Kul Gallery downtown hosted the first annual “Walk on the Wild Side” benefit on Saturday night. Auctioning off beautiful one-of-a-kind footwear, couture shoes and other fabulous prizes to benefit the Human Rights Campaign. From 8 p.m. to midnight the trendy store and art gallery was filled with some of the most influential people in fashion and the GLBT community.
Greeted by sumptuous hors d’euvres, delicious drinks, and some of the most buff men I’ve ever seen holding shoes on silver platters, the party most definitely started off on the right foot. The incredibly modern feel of the loft was the perfect backdrop against these beautiful and sometimes extravagant shoes.
Downstairs in the lofted basement is where the real party started. Scores of custom shoes and great gifts lined the room. Soon after 10:30 p.m. the live auction of select items began, including: a very valuable bottle of scotch (to match the scotch tasting bar at the event), a party thrown for forty of your closest friends, and one-of-a-kind boots designed and made by Adam Derek himself.
After the live auction, the silent auction started backup in full force, and by the end of the night there were some proud owners of new pumps.
With such an eventful weekend, full of shoes, fabulous bags, amazing ensembles and some of Dallas’s elite, it is safe to say that this was one of those weekends that can be chalked up to fashion.
At the Kul event, my date noticed a woman’s Birkin and pointed it out to me. I told the woman I loved her bag, and she responded, “I know, right,” clearly she is a devoted reader.
