SMU Track earns top finishes

The SMU women’s track and field team participated in the J.D. Martin Invitational at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday. The Mustangs posted nine top-five finishes, including three first-place wins.

SMU senior Gaelle Niare took first in the high jump with a mark of 1.84 meters while teammate Alesha Stegemoller took third with a jump of 1.73 meters. Junior Ilyssa Pettigrew set a new SMU record in the 1,000-meter race. Her time of 2:56.88 was good enough put her in first place.

Jessa Simmons earned her first-ever collegiate win as she placed first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:18.29, a personal best for the sophomore.

The Mustangs head to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Iowa State Cyclone Invitational Feb. 9 and 10.
