Student Senate unanimously approved a dispensation of $1,000 tohelp fund a celebrity fundraiser for Mi Escuelita Preschools in thecity of Dallas.
The fundraiser, cosponsored by SMU’s CollegeHispanic-American Students, will bring Hispanic celebrities such asHector Elizondo to SMU and other area campuses on Oct. 22.
The Hispanic students’ association initially requested$1,500 to pay for the celebrity speaker’s time and travelexpenses, plus $500 for renting space on the campus.
Mi Escuelita Preschools are designed to teach English tolow-income Spanish speaking students before they enter elementaryschool. Ninety-five percent of their students go straight toEnglish-speaking classrooms upon enrollment in public school.
In other business, Student Body President Thomas Kincaidannounced that the university has planned a fundraising effort tofully fund the new Dedman Center. Groundbreaking on the newbuilding is planned for February.
