Women’s soccer will host the Sam Houston State Bearkats tonight to kick of SMU’s Family Weekend events.
Senior Jena Lind explained, “The game is going to be an exciting event, especially since it will be Parent Weekend! It will be a good way to give thanks to our parents for all the support they give us and the team by winning against Sam Houston State.”
The Mustangs are going into tonight’s game coming off a 4-3 win over TCU, and a loss to Oklahoma State, and are prepared to put up a fight against the Bearkats.
“We had a very good win against TCU where we actually played very well. We’re feeling good, and we’re glad to play, have a good game and get into conference play next week,” said head coach Brent Erwin
With the beginning of conference play looming on the horizon, the women are getting more anxious with the approach of taking on other Conference USA rivals.
“We start conference play next weekend and want to go in strong. Hopefully this weekend will give us the boost we need for next weekends conference matches,” explained sophomore Kim Peabody.
Ashley Gunter will return to the net for SMU after posting her second highest total save record in last week’s game against OSU.
The team is filled with confidence and excitement heading into tonight’s game. “I know parents are excited about the whole weekend, and the SMU women’s soccer game is not a bad way to start it off,” said Lind.
“Any time you can play in front of your fans, and on your field, it helps. We like playing at home, we have a very good field. We’ve been getting good crowds, so we like playing at home.”
Sam Houston State currently poses a record of 1-4, while SMU stands at 3-2-1.
The game is scheduled to start tonight at 7 p.m. at Westcott Field.
