Senate chooses diversity chair

New members fill vacant seats

Student Senate filled five vacant positions earlier this week after a formal application and interview process.

Student body president Dustin Odham introduced the diversity chairwoman and Meadows, engineering and business senators before beginning the regular Senate meeting Tuesday.

Senior Morgan Gaskin, a current student representative to the Board of Trustees, was named as the new diversity chairwoman. She has already dedicated herself to taking a proactive stance on diversity issues this year.

“I’m really dedicated to seeing action this year instead of just table talk,” Gaskin said.

Unlike regular Senate elections, the student body does not vote for these chairperson positions.

The membership committee interviews the candidates, then gives its recommendations to the president. He makes up a ballot with just one name per position. The ballot goes to the Senate, and its members vote to approve the candidates.

A majority vote is needed to OK the nominations.

Odham was pleased with the committee’s recommendations.

“The membership committee did a great job in evaluating the candidates,” Odham said. “The student body is very fortunate to have such great individuals serving them.”

The new Meadows senator is Trevor C. Hubbard and the engineering senator is Jeffrey Pope. The two business senators are Lewis Ekive and Adam Russell.

The new senators take their positions immediately.
