Volleyball team wins big after tough loss

The SMU women’s volleyball team was resilient in its win against Boise State after a heartbreaking loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack on Thursday.

The Wolf Pack would have been a sweet victory for the Mustangs to take in conference. A win would have begun the conference play at 2-0 for only the second time in program history. In 1997, the Mustangs opened WAC play with wins over Rice and Tulsa.

The Wolf Pack was fearless in its recovery from a 2-0 Mustang lead. It fought for the third game victory, which sparked unstoppable momentum that would continue its undefeated record in conference.

“We have trouble maintaining our level of play throughout the whole match,” senior libero Kristen Peterson said. “We need to come out every game ready to play and not let up at all. We tend to let up a lot toward the end of the game.”

After a tremendous 17 digs in Thursday’s match, Peterson only needed two digs to reach 1,000 in her career.

Early in game one of Sunday’s match-up against Boise State, Peterson snatched those two digs and became the fourth player in SMU history to record 1,000 digs.

Peterson was one of the many Mustangs who contributed to the quick three game victories over the Broncos.

“It was certainly a team effort. Everybody on the team got playing time which is always nice,” head coach Lisa Seifert said. “The outside hitters both hit above 200 and that has been a goal and our middle blockers both hit above 300.”

The Mustangs trailed the Broncos for the beginning of the first game but rallied and took the match lead 1-0. Although the Broncos fought to catch up in the second match, the early lead created by the Mustangs was invariable. In the third match, SMU quickly surged to an 18-5 lead and never looked back to win the game.

Seifert said that she was relieved after the game was over because the way the team played in the first match was a little frightening.

“That typically isn’t how we play, but as the match progressed we played better. We started executing the game plan a little bit better so I am happy. It’s a win in the west,” Seifert said.

The next home game is at 11 a.m. on Oct. 19 against Hawaii, who is seated second in the nation.
