The SMU volleyball team returns to Dallas this weekend to take on both East Carolina and Marshall in Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs are 10-6 in the season and have a 6-2 record in games played at home.
SMU faces East Carolina Friday night at 7 p.m. The Pirates are led by junior Mignon Dubenien, who posted 14 kills and four blocks in East Carolina’s loss to UTEP last Sunday. Dubenien also earned All-Tournament honors after winning the East Carolina Classic. The Pirates are 3-4 on the road this season.
The Mustangs play Marshall on Sunday, Parent’s Day, at 1 p.m. SMU lost to Marshall 3-0 in 2005 when they met in West Virginia. The C-USA Offensive Player of the Week for the last two weeks is Thundering Herd player Kelly-Anne Billingly. The junior outside-hitter nailed 30 kills, seven service aces and nine digs versus Tulane. Marshall is 10-7 for the season and 8-6 on the road.
SMU Junior Rachel Giubilato is expected to continue to be a force at the Mustang net. The outside hitter is ranked 20th in the nation in kills after breaking a school record and posting 31 kills last weekend against UCF. Giubilato averages 4.83 kills per game, totaling 285 so far this season. In C-USA rankings, Giubilato is fourth overall in kills and fifth in points per game with 5.41.
Other Mustangs with individual C-USA rankings include sophomore Natalie Peters in 10th for hitting percentage (.297), Stefanie Kons in fifth with assists (11.53) and Candice Davis in ninth with digs (3.65). SMU ranks eighth overall in kills (14.81) and fifth in blocks (2.02).
The Mustangs continue to play at home when they take on Stephen F. Austin Tuesday at 7 p.m.
