Soccer to face another challenge

The SMU men’s soccer team is 11-0-1 for the season and 1-0 in C-USA, and facing another challenge this weekend when they meet the No. 13 ranked Kentucky Wildcats (8-2-1, 1-0). The Mustangs once again top all four, college Internet polls, making them the best collegiate soccer team in the nation.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on Saturday and the Mustangs’ first home game in nearly a month. SMU is undefeated at home and will face a Kentucky team that is relatively untested on the road. Only three of the Wildcats 11 games have been on the road and they are 1-1-1 in those contests.

In spite of its average on-the-road record, Kentucky will be a tough team to beat with Riley O’Neill as forward. He leads the Wildcats, who score about two and a half goals per game, with 12 goals in 11 games. O’Neill was showered with honors last week as he was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week, National Player of the Week by NSCAA and named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week. O’Neill received a red card against the Mustangs last year and he will be looking to score some goals on a solid SMU defensive unit that has only allowed five goals in 12 games.

The Wildcats defeated South Carolina on Sunday 1-0 with O’Neill scoring the winning goal, but lost to Indiana 0-1. Both teams are ranked in the top 20 in the nation. SMU beat Indiana earlier in the season 1-0.

The Mustangs’ offensive attack has improved over the past few weeks by scoring eight combined goals in the last three games. SMU needs a balanced offensive attack on Saturday to score on a Wildcat defense that has also only allowed five goals.

The Mustangs remain the last undefeated team in collegiate soccer, besides Fordham who has three ties and is ranked No. 12. Although the Wildcats will provide a challenge to the Mustangs’ undefeated record, SMU’s talent and team chemistry should carry the team a to victory in another ranked match.
