Following the huge success of their debut album Parachutes, Coldplay is back and looking to score another six million-selling record.
After nearly two years spent questing for the answer to that age-old rock query, “do our actions really mean a damn thing?,” the clean-cut four-piece from London released its first single, “In My Place,” from A Rush of Blood to the Head.
The empowering, fine-tuned rock anthem is nothing short of genius, harkening back to Coldplay’s first international hit, “Yellow.”
Both have that easy-natured quality that leaves lads singing to their girlfriends at every opportunity, no doubt after a few pints down at the pub.
Simple but effective, Jonny Buckland’s guitar riffs send shivers down any spine, and always the star, Chris Martin’s enchanting vocal melodies shine through, even more so now that he’s engaged in some singing lessons.
Lyrics like “please, please, please, come back and sing to me” challenge every guy’s ability (or inability) to beg his special lady for forgiveness.
Coldplay returns with a more mature and polished sound. The guys seem more relaxed than ever, despite their swiftly escalating fame.
If “In My Place” is any indication of the album to come, fans and critics alike should expect a gem of a record.
Until then, turn this one up to full volume and practice singing doe-eyed to your girlfriend.
A Rush of Blood to the Head is available in stores now.
