SMU’s track and field team has started the season off on the right foot. The men’s team is ranked No. 3 in the nation by TrackWire 25.

TrackWire 25 is an online power rankings index that ranks Division I teams based on the expected outcomes of the NCAA championships. SMU is ranked behind the University of Tennessee and Louisiana State University.

Tennessee is ranked No. 1 with a total of 77 points, only two points ahead of LSU. The Vols also won the Southeastern Conference title this past week, and the TrackWire projection has predicted them to place with more than double the points of SMU.

The Mustangs showed promise this past weekend, especially in the discus and shot, at the Texas Relays in Austin.

For the men, freshman Hannes Hopley and senior Janus Roberts placed third and fourth, respectively, in the discus with tosses of 57.82 meters and 57.40 meters.

In the women’s shotput, freshman Irache Quintanal and sophomore Ruta Rakstyte finished in fourth and sixth place with throws of 16.01 meters and 15.77 meters.

Senior Libor Charfreitag won the hammer with a toss of 74.38 meters, while his sister, sophomore Eva, placed fifth in the same event with a throw of 55.23 meters.

The track and field will have its next meet next week in Walnut, Calif. at the Mt. SAC relays.
