Mustangs seeded No. 1 in WAC

The men’s tennis team finished off its regular season play with Wednesday’s win against the University of Texas-Arlington.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 31 in the nation, triumphed over the Mavericks 5-1.

The highlight of the day was the match between UTA’s No. 2 ranked singles player Andy Leber and SMU’s No. 35 ranked Krystian Pfeiffer. After a long battle Pfeiffer fell victim to Leber’s powerful groundstrokes 6-4, 7-6.

“Andy is a good player, he’s ranked No.2,” head coach Carl Neufeld said. “Krystian played well against him.”

The Mustangs won the other four singles matches with ease and picked up two more wins in the doubles category. The No. 1 doubles team of Johan Brunstrom and Eric Cohn are ranked No. 13 in the nation.

Haggar Stadium has proven to be a home court advantage because the Mustangs have only lost four matches at home this year.

Most recently, the Mustangs took their winning streak on the road. The Ponies defeated the University of Tulsa last weekend in Oklahoma.

The Mustangs are 16-12 overall and will return to Tulsa at the end of April to participate in the WAC Championships. In the WAC tournament, the Mustangs will face teams they have beaten all season long. The Ponies are the No. 1 seed going into the tournament and Neufeld thinks the team is going to win the Championships.

“We have had a great season and SMU has not won the WAC in four years,” Neufeld said. “This year we are going to win it.”

After the WAC Tournament, SMU’s team will attempt to return to the Collegaite Final Four. The team lost in one of last season’s national semifinals to the University of Georgia.
