SMU students will have to change their parking habits if they’ve been parking on residential streets around SMU.

In an effort to create more parking for residents, the UP City Council unanimously voted to establish a residential parking district Tuesday night at the city council meeting.

Police Chief Gary Adams displayed a map of the included areas before a room that was barely half full. The district includes a significant area extending north, west and east of SMU.

Not everyone was happy with the terms of the plan or its boundaries. Several residents expressed their concern that the district did not include their streets or did not extend past 5:00 p.m.

Mayor W. Richard Davis advised, “This is not going to be a final product . . . this is our opening program and it will be massaged.” The parking district will not go into effect until August 1 of this year.
