SMU Track and Field competed in the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Houston this weekend, putting on a very impressive performance with a sixth place finish with a combined 45 points.
Sophomore Silje Fjortoft broke the record for the fastest time ran in the Conference USA Indoor Championships or in the University of Houston’s Yoeman Fieldhouse in the 5,000-meter. Fjortoft went on to win the event with an NCAA provisional time of 16:19.42, her second of the year, leading the Mustangs’ track and field team to finish fourth on the first day of competition.
Fjortoft’s success continued on to the second day, setting a new SMU record in the one-mile run and coming in second to Rice’s Lennie Waite. She was named Performer of the Meet and led the SMU women’s track and field team to finish sixth. Teammate Senior Rachael Forish was right behind Fjortoft, placing fifth in the mile and sixth in the 5,000-meter run.
The Mustangs received a strong performance from freshman Simone Du Toit throughout the competition. Du Toit finished second in the shot put with a throw of 14.63 meters.
In other events, the Mustangs finished sixth in the 4 x 400-meter relay in 3:52.79 with the team of Amber Evans, Gayla Cloud, Nneinna Ejeseinie, and Ebony Cuington. Evans also placed eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.23. Junior Jessa Simmons clocked a time of 10:10.56 in the 3,000 meter run, coming in 10th.
