Student dies in off-campus apartment Friday, support available

David Freitag, a 23-year-old senior from St. Louis, died Friday of an apparent suicide in his off-campus apartment.

Freitag was majoring in Film and Media Arts. He has also competed in Mr. and Mrs. SMU since 2009.

SMU released a statement saying, “The SMU community mourns the loss of David John Freitag, 23, a senior student in Meadows School of the Arts, who died in his off-campus residence September 30. We extend prayers and condolences to David’s family and other loved ones during this difficult time.”

The medical examiner of Dallas said Freitag died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
