The Mustangs are going through some hard times at this point of the season.
They’ve lost a game to Marshall in which they lost control. On top of losing Bamba Fall until the Conference USA Tournament and the questionable status of Devon Pearson, not to mention a four-game losing streak.
Fall had surgery on his broken left ring finger early Thursday morning, and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks.
Pearson missed the final minutes of Wednesday night’s game after landing awkwardly on his left knee. He will have an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.
As far as the four-game losing streak, the Mustangs could not have a better opponent to face or a better place to play.
SMU returns to Moody after a one-game road trip to face 0-11 East Carolina.
East Carolina is coming off a 80-42 loss to Southern Miss and the Mustangs are coming off a 52-49 loss at Marshall.
Ike Ofoegbu continues to be a dominating force for the Mustangs. Ofoegbu led the game in points, (18) and rebounds, (16) in Wednesday’s loss to the Thundering Herd.
But head coach Matt Doherty wants more.
Doherty will be the first to recognize the improvement in Ofoegbu’s play, but Doherty wants him to be a more vocal and emotional leader on the court.
“Ike had a great statistical game, but I want more energy out of him,” said Doherty.
The Mustangs lineup could look different when they take the court on Saturday night.
Derrick Roberts is still not 100 percent healthy, the severity of Pearson’s injury is still uncertain, and Fall will not be dressed for the game.
That will mean Cameron Spencer and Paulius Ritter might see more playing time towards the end of the season while the rest of the Mustangs heal.
Tip-off against the East Carolina Pirates is at 7 p.m. Saturday at Moody Coliseum.
