VIDEO: College Republicans, Democrats debate healthcare

The SMU College Republicans and College Democrats held a debate Wednesday night in the Varsity in Hughes-Trigg.

They discussed several heated issues, including the Affordable Care Act.

The Affordable Care Act, President Obama’s healthcare plan, arrived at the Supreme Court for the first time Wednesday after a 26 state coalition filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to hear the case and judge the constitutionality of the health care bill.

The main focus of the lawsuit is the section requiring all Americans to buy health insurance by 2014 or face financial penalties.

David de la Fuente, the President of College Democrats, said he believes the Affordable Care Act will be Obama’s most memorable moment as president.

Several Republicans in the audience challenged the bill’s constitutionality, expressing doubts that the U.S. Supreme court would uphold the bill as constitutional.

The Supreme Court should announce if they will take the case by the end of this year.
