Fan Can’ campaign stirs controversy

In a new campaign, Bud Light might use their beverages to spread school spirit by featuring school colors on beer cans. In response, SMU has joined numerous other schools in protesting the products.

SMU officials worry that the Bud Light “Fan Cans” discourage many campuses’ efforts in lowering underage drinking.

“I believe it’s exploitive for the company to distribute these cans,” said SMU Vice President of Student Affairs Lori White.

After making the news in drug and drinking related deaths in the 2006-2007 school year, SMU created the Task Force on Substance Abuse Prevention. White believes the campaign “undermines our efforts” to curb substance abuse.

“We do not support what they are doing for SMU or other campuses,” she said.

The cans are to feature different school colors without mascots or school symbols. According to The Dallas Morning News, these are scheduled to sell in local stores with colors for SMU, TCU and UNT.

An exact number of how many schools have asked to stop the promotion is unknown, but Anheuser-Busch will pull the cans if a university asks them to do so.

According to White, SMU is not planning on contacting Anheuser-Busch InBev to stop the promotion, as long as the SMU Fan Cans are not in stores.
