This week, I thought it would be a great idea to poll the students of SMU. I wanted to get a good feel for what students at SMU enjoyed wearing and an idea of some things they absolutely can’t live without. They were asked the question, “Do you have a Ralph Lauren or Lacoste polo. and, if so, how many?”
After I polled 60 students, 70 percent of them had Ralph Lauren or Lacoste polo shirts. Forty-six percent of those students own five or more of this brand of polo shirts. Seventeen percent own 10 or more Polo shirts made by these lovable designers. These number simply state that SMU students will forever be donned in polo shirts, though not just any kind of polo shirt: designer ones. This is yet another symbol of the infamous SMU status.
Although these Ralph Lauren and Lacoste shirts are priced at $60 and $72, respectively, our fellow students do not mind dishing out the cash in order to look nice. As I surveyed the campus, there were other trends that were noticeably prevalent amongst these fashionistas.
As I was sitting in my CCPA writing class, I looked around and noticed that everyone but two students was wearing Rainbow flip-flops. These comfortable sandals will forever be a necessity on the campus.
Along with the polo shirts, most girls will pair a string of pearls and pull their hair back with designer sunglasses, most likely Chanel, Gucci or Dior. The typical SMU outfit would not be complete without the designer jeans.
The pockets will differentiate the brand; most people at SMU have Sevens, Citizens of Humanity or True Religion jeans.
At SMU, it is quite noticeable that most students share the same type of style, especially the boys. Most boys at SMU will be viewed in brightly-colored Ralph Lauren polos with shorts that match the color of the miniature horse on the shirt.
Recently, I have noticed that Ralph Lauren has come out with shorts with several colorful little horses all over them like polka dots. Of course, our boys have picked up a pair and matched yet another bright polo with these shorts. The trends of SMU are fashionable but, above that, constitute as being preppy.
So, last week you got the “Ins and Outs” of fashion, and now, you should be able to combine that with the trends of SMU to feel completely put together.
Naturally, there will always be some trends that will not change for a long time here at SMU. These are the outfits that we see other students wearing year after year, so we know that these trends are going nowhere.
