Veterans lead service of worship

A service of worship and Thanksgiving in honor of Veterans Day was held in the Perkins Chapel Wednesday afternoon.

The “Veterans in Service to God” procession welcomed a modest crowd, including ten or so uniformed veterans. The service honored those in the military who sacrifice their lives in defense of our country.

All of the participants in the service were either uniformed service military veterans, active reserve or retired military. Rev. Mary Miriti, a US army chaplain and graduate of the Perkins School of Theology, led the sermon.

“It’s important to understand that these service members are not just serving a place, but a kingdom, and that kingdom is God’s kingdom,” said Glenn Luhrs, liturgist and retired USAF master sergeant.

The service followed through with traditional songs of praise and a powerful sermon, which expressed gratitude for the strength and courage of our veterans. But the service also emphasized the importance of faith in times of war.

“Their love of God is simply the extension of love of country,” said Luhrs.
