On Nov. 11, the SMU Mustangs delivered an impressive all-around performance to secure an 81-68 win over UNC Greensboro at Moody Coliseum.
The first half was a tight contest, with both teams exchanging baskets and defensive stops throughout. Despite guard Boopie Miller missing a three-pointer for SMU, the Mustangs were able to quickly recover.
After a foul by Miller, the Mustangs dominated on the boards with center Samet Yigitoglu grabbing an offensive rebound.
A steal by forward Yohan Taroe ignited a fast break, and guard BJ Edwards responded with a jumper and a free throw. Miller made up for his earlier miss with a three-pointer assisted by Edwards, and Yigitoglu delivered an explosive dunk—his first bucket of the season—helping SMU build to a 41-35 lead at halftime.
In the second half, SMU took command, with several players contributing key moments. Guard Kario Oquendo had a turnover early on, but Samet Yigitoglu’s offensive rebound and guard Chuck Harris’ jumper kept the momentum going.
Forward Matt Cross stayed steady throughout the game and added a jumper while BJ Edwards continued to shine, contributing five steals and 12 points. Edwards’ defensive intensity was a major factor in limiting UNC Greensboro’s offensive flow.
As the clock started to wind down in the last half, Miller scored consistently. Yigitoglu added another dunk to his highlight reel. A series of timely defensive rebounds and free throws helped the Mustangs maintain a comfortable lead down the stretch. By the time the final buzzer sounded, SMU had pulled away for the 81-68 victory.
“We played hard and very well,” said Coach Enfield after the game. “We did some things differently that we didn’t do in the first two games, but I believe our boys played exceptionally well today.”
With a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense, the Mustangs are poised for a promising season. Looking ahead, SMU will aim to keep their momentum as they prepare for their next home game against Prairie View A&M on Monday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
