Robin, an SMU undergraduate student, was sexually assaulted onthe fourth floor of the Airline parking garage on Saturday. Thestudent, who asked that her last name be withheld, had beenstudying on the second floor of Fondren Library before the rapeoccurred.
Earlier that evening, she decided to take a break and go to therestroom.
“I left my water bottle on the desk with my books,”she said.
After returning to study, she drank the remaining contents ofher water bottle and continued with her work.
“Just before nine or so, I started to feel really woozy, you know, just really weird. I decided to call it quits and headhome,” she said.
Robin checked out a couple of books and headed to her car.Leaving the library is the last thing she remembers before wakingup in her parked car in the Airline garage around 10:30 p.m.
“When I woke up, my pants were undone and down, and I washurting,” she said.
Robin immediately suspected that during the hour and a half thathad passed since she left the library, she had been the victim of asexual assault.
In a move not taken by most victims of rape, she called the SMUpolice department to report the incident. The SMU police activitylog lists her call as coming in at 10:35 p.m.
“When I talked to them, I told them I was hurting. I triedto be as clear as possible about where I was hurting and what Ithought had happened,” Robin said. Robin suspects that a drugmay have been slipped into Robin’s water bottle in thelibrary by the rapist while she had gone to the restroom.
Robin was taken to Presbyterian Hospital to rule out anyinternal bleeding or other medical complications. When doctors weresure there weren’t any physical danger, Robin was taken toParkland Hospital’s 24-hour rape crisis and sexual abusecenter.
“I was a crime scene, and they needed theirevidence,” she said.
Her rape evidence kit included a toxins screening to check forthe presence of drugs in her system. Results are pending.
The case is still open. No campus alerts were issued over theweekend concerning the sexual assault.
