The Mustangs will look to continue a perfect spring season as they take on Midwestern State tonight in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Winning their spring exhibition season opener against Richland College in a 2-0 shutout on Feb.28, the Mustangs continue to work towards what will hopefully be a winning season this fall.
In last season’s match-up between the teams, SMU defeated MSU, leading to a scoreless spring 2008 season with four games. Last season’s game was played at Westcott Field
Finishing the 2008 season at 10-6-2 under first-year head coach Tim McClements, the Mustangs struggled to break into the post season, losing in the quarterfinal round of the Conference USA Tournament.
Now working towards replacing last year’s senior class, led by Paulo da Silva, the Mustangs welcome freshmen Ben Hill, Blake Milton, T.J. Nelson and Bryan Ponce to the lineup. In a press release on SMUMustangs.com, McClements explained, “this is a well-balanced class that provides depth and competition at every position.”
The newest edition, freshman defender Austin Hiatt will also join the Mustangs for the fall season.
Also joining the roster are Basile Riboud, Tate McMullen and Josue Soto, all of whom joined the team in January.
Tonight’s game against MSU features a team that went 19-3-0 last season, including an undefeated run on their home field. Averaging 3.09 goals per game last season, the Division II school went on the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No.9 Cal State-Dominguez Hills.
As for the Mustangs, SMU averaged just under two goals per game last season.
Tonight’s game will begin at 7 p.m.
