SMU will host “Living Life Creatively,” a workshop featuring Sara Hickman, this Saturday. The workshop will be in the Taubman Atrium at the Meadows School of Arts and the Caruth auditorium with a concert.
This is the first time the Houston-born artist will present her workshop in Dallas, and she hopes to promote her ideas to the participants to help them live their life creatively through song, dance, painting and games.
Described as a “singing poet” by Jim Beal of the San Antonio Express News, Hickman made her musical debut at age 14 at a Houston Oilers party and released her first album, “Equal Scary People,” in 1989, landing a deal with Elektra Records.
Since then, Hickman has released 13 more albums, including Christmas and Valentine’s Day CDs.
Hickman has received several awards for her work and has appeared twice on “The Tonight Show,” in addition to hosting her own VH1 Special and producing her own video, “Joy,” which won the first prize at the U.S. Film Festival.
Hickman is also highly active in many philanthropic organizations, such as The Humana Women in Health Initiative and the Austin Race for the Cure. She has donated over $50,000 to the Hill Country Youth Ranch, which aids neglected children, and the Mautner Project, which aids lesbians with cancer.
The workshop will be on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and costs $125 for the general public and $115 for SMU faculty and staff. Individuals registered for the workshop can purchase a ticket for $5. Those not registered can buy tickets for $20, while SMU faculty and staff can buy tickets for $15.
