Going to the cinema can get pricey. The cost of tickets for movie theaters has slowly risen over the years, so it’s hard to find a price less than $10. However, many cinemas are combating the need to raise prices without losing all their customers. This includes offering weekly/monthly deals and also providing discounts to students. The following are cinemas close to SMU that offer deals to cinephiles and students alike.

1. Alamo Drafthouse

There are several Drafthouse cinemas scattered across the metroplex, though the Lake Highlands location on Abrams and Skillman is closest to campus. Alamo Drafthouse offers the latest releases from Hollywood, while also hosting singalongs to musicals, movie parties for cult classics and more fun cinematic events. Alamo programmer James Wallace says movie parties for films like “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” attract many students. The company offers a $1 discount for students daily and $5 tickets for everyone on Tuesdays. In addition, Alamo’s Victory Rewards program is free and allows patrons to benefit from their visits over time through useful perks such as free screenings and snack vouchers. Alamo Drafthouse is also in the midst of creating a special Alamo pass that is similar to AMC’s A-List.

2. AMC

For moviegoers interested in larger screens, DOLBY and IMAX offers, AMC’s Northpark Mall location is just three miles north of SMU and offers these special formats. Students can receive a special discount with their student ID. AMC also has its own membership program that allows members to take advantage of $5 Tuesdays. The theater’s main incentive is the A-List Program. For only $20 a month, users can see up to three movies a week in any format of their choosing and gain rewards through the Stubs membership.

The Angelika theater is the closest to SMU (walking distance) and has a few offers up its sleeve. On Tuesdays, students can head over to Mockingbird Station and get a discounted ticket plus a free box of popcorn.
