The SMU Volleyball team defeated Tulsa, 3-1,Wednesday night at an away game. It was Tulsa’s first conference loss since 2009.
The Mustangs started strong as they were going back and forth with the Golden Hurricanes. After a 7-7 tie score, SMU challenged Tulsa by scoring 10 points and receiving only two, giving the Mustangs an eight point lead. Tulsa was unable to make such a desperate comeback in the first set and lost with a score of 25-19.
The Mustangs were quick to respond after Tulsa took the second set, blowing out the Mustangs 25-15. SMU took an early lead in the third set, 10-6, and was able to maintain the lead throughout the set. The Mustangs actually took a seven-point lead and did not give a chance for the Golden Hurricanes to catch up, therefore winning the set 25-18.
The fourth set was taken by SMU, coming back from a four-point lead Tulsa gained. After five kills each in the set from both senior outside hitters Jessica Oliver and Dana Powell, SMU took the set and captured the much needed victory.
SMU put a stop to Tulsa’s seven-match winning streak.
SMU now improves their overall record to 6-11 and C-USA record to 2-3, while Tulsa fell to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
The Mustangs return back home to host Tulane on Saturday at 2 p.m.
