WNIT: Mays’ 34 not enough to top Minnesota

SMU’s post season came to an abrupt end on Sunday, as the Mustangs lost to Minnesota 77-70 in the second round of the WNIT, despite Keena Mays scoring 34 points for the Mustangs.

For Mays, Sunday’s loss was bitter sweet- her 34 points put her season scoring total at 691, eight points over SMU’s single season all-time record. Breaking school records is always nice, but advancing to the next round of a tournament is even better.

After trailing by as as 19 in the second half, SMU pulled within two possessions at the end of the game. It was a inspiring comeback attempt by SMU, fueled by Mays, who scored 24 points in the second half.

Minnesota shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and held a 46-29 advantage at halftime.

Mays, Akil Simpson, Mallory Singleton, Korina Baker and Krystal Johnson played their final game as Mustangs on Sunday.

Simpson finishes 13th all-time at SMU with 1,234 points.

Rompola has led SMU to the postseason in 13 of the last 21 seasons and the second round appearance in the WNIT was the deepest postseason run for her Mustangs since 2000.
