With two events left to play in the regular season, the SMU Men’s Golf team is ranked 31 in the nation for Division I men’s golf.
So far, the Mustangs have had a successful spring season. The team won the season-opener, the Farms Collegiate Invitational Title in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif. Feb. 8-9, and Ryan Burgess got an invitational title.
The Mustangs went on to finish tied for fifth at the 2016 All-American Intercollegiate in Houston Feb. 19-21. Senior Austin Smotherman had the lowest score for the Mustangs and finished tied for 10th.
The Mustangs finished tied for eighth in the following tournament, the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas March 7-9, out of 15 teams. Smotherman had the best score on the team, finishing tied for eighth out of 78. This tournament marked the fourth consecutive event in which Smotherman finished in the top 10.
In the latest tournament of the season, The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. March 24-26, the Mustangs finished 11 out of the 26 teams. Sophomore Gray Townsend led the Mustangs and finished tied for 17.
The Mustangs will soon head to the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn. April 2-3. And the final tournament of the regular season for is the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa April 16-17.
