Dear Editor:
One week ago, the SMU Women’s Swimming and Diving team returned from the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala., with a fourth place finish. This accomplishment could be compared to making it to the Final Four in any other sport.
After three days of intense competition, the team was finally able to beat some of the swimming super powers such as Stanford and Texas – something we always knew we were capable of doing.
Flavia Rigamonti successfully defended her national titles in the 500 yard and 1650 yard freestyle events. Many other swimmers came home with medals and All-American titles.
It was truly fantastic to see the last four years of hard work finally come together. Never have I seen anyone compete with such heart and pride for her school as the Lady Mustangs did that week.
As a senior, I feel privileged that I was a part of such a special and talented group of women.
Over the last several years the women’s swimming and diving team has gained the respect and recognition of coaches and athletes worldwide.
It is sad that the team is barely recognized on its own campus. In the week following the event, not a single word was mentioned in The Daily Campus.
These athletes work very hard to represent SMU, and are surprised and disappointed at this oversight.
