The SMU men’s golf team won the 2002 Baylor Invitational at Bear Ridge Golf Club in Waco, Texas, Tuesday. The team was four shots behind Baylor going into the day, but overcame the deficit with a 15-under par total of 286. For the Mustangs, it was there second No. 1 finish of the year.
The Mustangs were crowned co-champion of the Colbert Invitational earlier this month in Manhattan, Kansas.
“This win was great for the team, because we really haven’t had that great of a season,” senior Brock Mulder said. “We had one co-win, but the rest of our finishes weren’t that great, so it was really big for us to win against a lot of district teams,” Mulder said.
Mulder shot a final round one-under par 71 to win the individual medalist title. Mulder’s 71 was added to his Monday rounds of 66 and 67 to finish the tournament at 12-under par, ahead of Louisville’s Brett Jones by one shot.
“It meant a lot to me to win the tournament, but it meant more to me to have us all win,” Mulder said.
Senior Ryan Abbate finished in a tie for 22nd place at even for the tournament. Stephen Sparolini shot a three round total of 219 to put him in a tie for 39th place. Scott Abbott shot the low SMU round of the day with a two-under par 70 and finished four over par for the tournament. Ben McCaslin rounded out the team with his second consecutive 72.
With the win and the close of their fall season, SMU will have momentum going into the spring.
“This win is going to be great for us. We can dwell on it for the next few months and we’ll have a positive attitude going into our first tournament next season,” Mulder said.
The Mustangs begin the spring season Feb. 10-11 when they travel to New Orleans, La., to take part in the Tulane Invitational.
