The Student Organized Art Collective held a reception for the exhibit “Light, Undefined,” on March 3. Students and faculty filtered into the Doolin and Jordan Galleries to admire the different works. Projects ranged from woodwork to music composition.
SOAC is the only organized art organization on campus that dedicates itself to embracing art of any medium. The group prides itself on creating opportunities to showcase students’ creativity and promote professional development.
Yana Spitzer, co-president of SOAC, moved between the galleries to supervise and run the event.
“I thought it was a really great opportunity to promote art making and create an art-based community here at SMU,” Spitzer said. “I want people to see all of the art that people make across campus. There’s a lot around, but it’s not so well known because there’s not a place to display them.”
Each semester, SOAC allows artists to display their work in these exhibitions. Each piece told its own story with the use of light and shadows to explore deeper meanings.

SMU junior and BFA major Sage Thompson conveyed the meaning behind her own painting, “Determination.” Thompson shared how she incorporated her experience with mental health into her piece, as well as how she wishes to reach its viewers.
“Hopefully they’ll see their own struggles and see they’re not alone,” Thompson said.
Guests continued to stop by through the evening to grab a soda and admire the artwork. Murmurs discussing the pieces filled the gallery as students snapped pictures of pieces made by friends.
“I feel like everyone here should be extremely proud of themselves,” said junior Lee Vaylon. “I’m really enjoying the exhibit. There are some very impressive works here.”
The “Light, Undefined” exhibition will only be available to view in these galleries until Sunday, March 9. Another pop-up show will occur later this month on March 23.
“It’s going to be focused on culture and heritage so people can share works relating to their identity in a way,” Spitzer said.
SOAC continues to bring arts culture to bloom around campus through its exhibitions and collaborative events. The passion of these students embodies the life and talent SMU holds within its student body.
