Three former SMU football players have caught on with NFL teams after going undrafted this past spring. Sterling Moore, Pete Fleps and Youri Yenga have all been involved in the utter chaos that has followed the end of the NFL lockout.
Moore was first to hear the good news when he received a phone call from his hometown team, the Oakland Raiders, this morning.
“And it’s official. I’m a Raider!!! Gotta go try and win this spot,” said Moore via Twitter on Tuesday. “Flying out to Oakland later today, can’t wait for camp to start tomorrow.”
The 5-foot-10, 204-pound cornerback, impressed NFL scouts in the off season and rumors circulated that Moore would be a possible late round selection. However, when that didn’t pan out, Moore was forced to play the waiting game.
Now, the former SMU star finally has his chance and is ready to compete for a roster spot. Last season, Moore had a team-high 11 pass breakups and recorded 35 tackles for the Mustangs.
Linebackers Yenga and Fleps received their exciting news next later on in the day as the two signed with the Atlanta Falcons and St. Louis Rams, respectively.
On the Hilltop, Yenga and Fleps were two of SMU’s most dynamic defensive players and leaders in 2010. The pair was both honorable mention All-Conference USA selections and was instrumental in helping SMU reach their second straight bowl game.
The Daily Campus will continue to monitor NFL free agency as undrafted rookie free agents including more former Mustangs continue to await their shot at playing professional football.
