I realize we live in a world filled with bias and judgment levied upon the oppressed. In truth, it is a sad fact of life it exists, but prejudice should always be rallied against.
Recently you ran an article in your newspaper asking Lance Bass if he was single because “…all the girls and sexually confused boys want to know,” dated Oct. 31, 2007.
Now to some, this statement seems fine as is, but in truth, it is subjective and cruel. It is one thing to suggest that there are a few in this world who are “sexually confused,” but it is a whole other issue to state that all males who are attracted to another male are “sexually confused.”
I speak for those who have been silenced when I ask, isn’t a journalist’s noble intent to relay objective information? And I speak for the masses of the oppressed when I ask, is it too much for you to look at your own prejudice and objectively choose your own terminology?
Personally, a public apology to all who have been offended is necessary, however that will not end the corruption that continues because of subliminal prejudice that infiltrates our world, especially in language.
As a former collegiate journalist, I believe you should you take the noble route; however, should you continue with your corrupt and biased language, I condemn your policies.
A constant reminder: Your preferred terminology speaks volumes.
