Yet another pop music phenomena makes his way to the big screen this weekend in an attempt to “pull a J.Lo.”
Eminem’s 8 Mile opens in wide release, leaving the door open for an Eminem double-take.
The rapper looks to be the second superstar in history to have both the number one movie and number one album in the same week, something Miss Lopez did when she released the romantic comedy The Wedding Planner in summer 2001.
But 8 Mile is no blasé, clichéd swoon-fest; it’s a dark and dirty movie that has already won top honors for the most Oscar buzz this year.
Despite all the talk, the naughty rhymer has already vowed he will not be taking any more leading roles in movies, something many fans might feel the need to cry about.
The editorial board says good riddance. Since when do singers have to act, and actors have to model and models have to do both? Why can’t these people just focus on one talent? It does not seem fair to the rest of the world to give performers like Britney, J. Lo. and Eminem more than their share of fame.
It’s like your high school valedictorian who went to The University of North Carolina on a women’s soccer scholarship – you just can’t help but despise her for having so many gifts.
Yeah, sure, it’s interesting to watch someone excel in so many areas, but deep down it’s all an outward projection of how much you wish you had some of their talents.
It’s hard enough trying to graduate college while magazines and television shows tout ‘the hottest 20 under 20 in show business.’ It’s as though if you haven’t accomplished anything by 21, it’s too late for you.
You are a permanent member of the rat race, and nothing glamourous will come of you.
Recently, Elton John said the entertainment industry is exploiting young performers and that the business is about image and little else. If so, at least we’ve got one good excuse for graduating without a record deal.
