SMU Women’s Volleyball faced Wake Forest on Oct. 24 inside Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs made it a short night for the Demon Deacons, winning the match in three straight sets. They are now on a seven-match win streak and tied for fourth place in the ACC with Louisville. Their overall record is 15-4
Entering the match, SMU had nothing but confidence, and the energy was felt as fans in the Coliseum wore pink.
In the first set, Wake Forest made their presence known by beating SMU in kills. The discipline could not stay contained, as they beat SMU in errors, which led them to lose the first set. Wake Forest led in total attempts at scoring by setting each other up, but the Mustang defense was too strong.
The second and third sets were no different from each other. Nothing but pure domination from the Mustangs, winning both sets 25-14.
Opposite hitter and graduate student, Malaya Jones, asserted dominance play after play, finishing the match with 16 kills. This Mustang isn’t just an offensive powerhouse, but a killer on the defensive side too, getting herself a few digs and blocks throughout the match.
Jones wasn’t the only player to take over on Friday. Senior setter Averi Carlson was a key teammate in their win, getting 28 assists. This made her a part of over a third of the Mustang’s points.
The Mustangs have a real chance at getting a high seed in the conference tournament, for they have 10 matches left and only two of them are facing teams with a record of about .500. Now, with momentum on their side and confidence running high, the Mustangs continue to prove they are a force to be reckoned with in the ACC. If they can maintain their consistency down the stretch, the NCAA tournament can be seen once again in their future.
