The Mustangs didn’t have enough offense to compete with Southern Miss Saturday night at Ford Stadium.
SMU’s defense held the Golden Eagles to just seven first half points, the fewest by any opponent this season, but gave up three touchdowns in the second half and Southern Miss won 28-12.
The Mustangs finally got into the end zone with just under six minutes left in the game when quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell found former quarterback Justin Willis in the end zone for a four-yard pass.
On the attempted two-point conversion Mitchell once again found Willis, but just short of the goal line. Willis led all SMU receivers with 11 catches for 88 yards.
Mitchell ended the game completing 26 of 49 passes for 253 yards, with the touchdown and two interceptions. Along with just four rushing yards the SMU offense had only 257 total offense yards, the third lowest this season.
Kickoff returner Jessie Henderson set the NCAA record for career kick return yards with 2,945 yards in his career. Henderson came into his final collegiate game needing 45 yards, he got 64 yards on four returns.
The Mustangs end the season 1-11 on a 10-game losing streak for the second year in a row.
