“A Fair to Remember” is the theme of Mane Event 2005 hosted by Student Foundation and Program Council.
Mane Event is their annual end-of-the-year block party with free food, fun and entertainment for all members of the SMU community.
Matt Shaw of Program Council and Susan Carmody of Student Foundation are this year’s Mane Event Co-Chairs. Shaw and Carmody have been working for several months to plan Mane Event along with their coordinators, advisors and respective vice presidents of programming. “The day is packed with food and entertainment and is sure to provide an afternoon of fun,” said Carmody.
The 2005-2006 Student Senate Inauguration will kick-off Mane Event 2005 on the Main Quad in front of Dallas Hall at 3 p.m.
Mustang Gladiator will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Boulevard in the inflatables. Mustang Gladiator is modeled after the show “American Gladiator.” Students will compete for the title of “SMU Gladiator” through a series of physical events such as jousting, an obstacle course and a rock climbing wall.
From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. the Boulevard and Main Quad will be transformed into a carnival-like atmosphere. There will be carnival food and attractions, all of which are free.
The food will include funnel cakes, cotton candy, barbeque, sandwiches, nachos, ice cream sandwiches, lemonade and more.
Carnival attractions will be available such as bumper cars, miniature golf and a waterslide.
Students will also be able to participate in the Scratch DJ Academy, caricature drawings, inflatable games, laser tag, wax hands, photo buttons, a mechanical bull, a rock climbing wall, virtual NASCAR racing and a photo sticker machine.
“Our goal is for students to be able to spend the afternoon at the event and not have to do anything twice,” said Carmody.
Live entertainment will be provided throughout the day during the event by Poison Cherry, Hollington Drive and Flip.
Poison Cherry is more than just an 80s cover band. They try to mimic every detail from the 80s hair bands to jump kicks to makeup according to band member Jakk M.F. Wylde. The band consists of Nikki Lixx on lead vocals, DD Semans on lead guitar, Trash on lead guitar, Ten Inch Rikk on bass and Jakk M.F. Wylde on the drums.
Hollington Drive is a Pop/Rock band which resembles a mix between Maroon 5 and John Mayer. The band consists of David Garcia on lead vocals, Ryan Hollington on lead guitar, Jeremy Orr on the drums and Cam Urano on bass.
“I look forward to an outdoor venue in the middle of what is going to be a beautiful sunny day. Also, there will be people there that have never heard us perform, so it will be a great opportunity for us to perform well and let them enjoy our music. Obviously we want whoever listens to us like our music and support us in the future when we come out with our demo CD,” said band member David Garcia.
Flip Caderao sings The SMU Song. The song’s lyrics mock the stereotypes of all SMU students and their high-class lifestyles. The song mentions Peruna the mascot, Greek life, the SMU fashionistas, bus parties, the Umphrey Lee cafeteria crowd and pony ears.
“We hope that students will take advantage of this opportunity to have a fun day by watching their fellow students – Hollington Drive and Flip – perform, checking out all of the activities, eating and watching Juvenile perform at no cost to them right on campus,” said Carmody.
Mane Event will conclude with a concert in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m. Popular recording artist Juvenile, with hits including ‘Back That Azz Up’ and ‘Slow Motion’, will headline the event.
Cornbread & J.P., two Dallas area rap artists, will open the concert in Moody Coliseum with a special appearance by V.O.C.
Tickets are free to the SMU community and may be picked up at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Mane Desk. SMU students, staff and faculty must bring an SMU ID with them and their one guest to enter the concert. Multiple guests will not be permitted with one SMU ID. Security will be strictly enforced: no purses, backpacks, cameras or outside food and drink will be permitted into Moody Coliseum.
