The No. 17 SMU men’s soccer team lost Sunday night to UCF 1-0. The Mustangs are now 8-0-1 after UCF handed them their first lost in nine games. SMU is now 4-1 in conference play and 8-3-2 on the season.
In the 69th minute UCF’s Steven Lamberta managed to corral a loose ball inside the box and get in for the winning goal. Lamberta’s goal stopped SMU goal keeper Jaime Ibarra’s shut-out streak at three. Even with the loss Ibarra tallied five saves on the night.
SMU’s trend of being out-shot by opponents continued in Sunday’s loss. UCF managed six shots on goal to SMU’s two. UCF had a total of 11 shots-eight of them in the second period while SMU only managed seven shots all game.
The Mustangs hope to rekindle their offense in the second game of their Florida road trip against FIU tonight at 6 p.m.
SMU holds a 15-3 all-time record against FIU, but the last two meetings have been nail bitters. In 2011, SMU defeated FIU in an overtime thriller at Westcott field 2-1. In that game the Mustangs outshot FIU 15-9. In 2010, the Mustangs beat FIU 2-1, in overtime with T.J. Nelson scoring the game-winning goal in the 99th minute.
After tonight’s game the Mustangs will set their eyes on post season play. SMU has made it to the NCAA Tournament 16 of the last 18 years and holds a record of 31-22-7 in the post season.
