The No. 45 SMU Women’s Tennis team won over No. 75 Furman 5-2 Tuesday at Brookhaven Country Club.
Mustang Pavi Francis faced Lauren Osborne at No. 2 doubles. SMU took the win 9-8 (7-1).
The No. 3 doubles team consisting of Monica Neveklovska and Kristen Reid defeated Lisa Bornt-Davis and Lauren Tomory 8-4, and the No. 1 doubles team of Natalia Bubien and Claire Rietsch clinched the doubles point for SMU with an 8-6 win over Laura Gioia and Natasa Manojloivc.
Newly appointed No. 1 singles player Chay tried to coax herself into a win against Gioia, but she lost the baseline slugfest 6-4, 6-1.
Bubien got down to business at the No. 2 slot, beating Osborne, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
“[Chay] has done everything that she needs to earn that [No.1] spot,” coach Longbotham said. “It depends on who’s playing and how they’re practicing.”
The No. 3 singles match reached a tiebreaker in the first set before Rietsch handed Bonnie Baird a loss, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
The win improves SMU’s record to 7-3. The next match is against New Mexico State at noon on Sat. March 3 at the Garland Tennis Center.
