Mustangs must grin and bear it

The Mustangs (1-1) will have a tough test this weekend when they try to rebound from a 3-2 double-overtime loss to Arkansas.

After facing Colorado State on Friday at noon, the team will get its biggest test on the young season against seventh ranked Baylor.

Into the 102nd minute of play, Arkansas’ Ashleigh Ellenwood scored over SMU’s goalie, Shannon Moroney, sending the team to a 1-1 record. The bright spots however were Shelby Redman and Rachael Larson’s goals in the second half to put the game into extra time.

Colorado State enters with a 1-2 record. Their last game on Sunday was against Texas Tech in which the Rams suffered a 6-0 beating that may lead to a lack of confidence coming into their match with SMU.

Baylor however has come into the season looking like a national champion contender. In the Bears two games this season, they’ve outscored their opponents 10-0 on their way to a 2-0 record and a top-10 ranking.

The home stand will also go a long distance in deciding between Moroney and Lauren Bodden for the first team goalie spot.

During SMU’s 6-1 win against the University of Louisiana Monroe, the Mustangs split the playing time for the two in half, with each playing an even 45 minutes.

Whomever head coach Chris Petrucelli decides to put in front of the net, their job will not be easy against a tough couple of teams in the friendly confines of Westcott field.
