Detours ahead

Construction on campus during school year causes problems

Surely everyone has noticed the construction on campus, 60-foottall cranes are difficult to miss. However we shouldn’t beseeing construction on campus, or at least not as much as there iscurrently.

The Collins building is understandable as that is a majorproject. There are however other areas that are unnecessary, suchas the four orange posts taking up half of Binkley in front ofLetterman hall.

The new sidewalks installed in the north quad weren’tcompleted until last Monday. What was being done over thesummer?

The Sigma Phi Epsilon house renovations, which were supposed tobe completed before August, didn’t even start until lastweek. The necessary construction being done on campus, and aroundcampus in the University Park area, is causing enough trouble as itis.

We don’t need the added hassle of construction projectsscheduled for summer completion going on during the first weeks ofschool.

It’s good to see that the university is putting ourtuition dollars to good work beautifying our campus, butwouldn’t the best time for the campus to look beautiful bethe beginning of the year, when all the first-years are arrivingwith their parents?

The construction on Airline certainly couldn’t have helpedthe navigation of those new to the campus.

It isn’t as bad as the construction on Binkley, which wasgoing on at this time last year, but it is certainly ahindrance.

This is just another example of poor planning and execution bythe university.

Another is the projects which were chosen. For example, somesidewalks were replaced in north quad, but not the section ofsidewalk near Virginia-Snyder that is under 4 inches of water everytime it rains.

The administration needs to take into account what is reallyimportant when it comes to construction, and make sure that thingsget done in a timely manner.
