Mustangs win C-USA championship semi-finals

The SMU men’s soccer team defeated No. 1 seed South Carolina in the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship match Friday night at Hurricane Stadium. The Mustangs were able to shut out the Gamecocks 1-0.

The lone goal was scored by junior forward Ben Hill in the 27th minute. Midfielder T.J. Nelson grabbed the ball as it was cleared out of the box from a corner kick. The junior fired a shot from about 22 yards out of the box but did not find the back of the net. Hill was then able to place the ball just inside the right post and past Gamecock goalkeeper Alex Long. Hill’s goal marked his second one for the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra had a top performance and earned his fourth shutout of the season. One of his biggest moments of the match was when he saved a firing shot from South Carolina’s leading scorer Bradlee Baladez in the 55th minute. Ibarra also stopped a corner kick on the line with three seconds remaining in the match.

Senior defender Diogo de Almeida also marked a game winning save on Baladez. de Almeida went for a slide tackle in the 19th minute to prevent a Baladez from finding the back of the net.

The Gamecocks ended their season with a 9-7-2 record, as the Mustangs make one last improvement to 12-6-1.

The Mustangs head to the Conference USA Championship final to face No. 17 UAB on Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
