Elliott Scores 1,000th Point Despite Loss against Wichita State

Leading the Mustangs with 13 points, senior post Christine Elliott made history during SMUs matchup with Wichita State Saturday.

Elliott scored her 1,000th point in her hometown of Wichita, Kan. and became the 19th player in the history of SMU women’s basketball program to score 1,000 career points. Before the game began against the Shockers, Elliott was just six points away from the record. With only three minutes into the ball game Elliott reached the milestone with a layup to complete her third field goal of the game.

After finishing 5-of-6 from the field and 3-for-5 from the stripe, Elliott now has 1,007 career-points. However, the Wichita State Shockers (3-4) proved to be the better team by taking a 63-43 victory.

The Shockers dominated the first half, shooting 64 percent from the field and held a 17-point advantage heading into the locker room.

When the second half began SMU was still unable to push past Wichita State. The Mustangs shot 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) at the free throw line and 7-of-30 (23.3 percent) from the field for the second part of the game. The Shockers shot 100 percent from the free throw line and 40 percent from the field in the final half.

Wichita State had two players leave the arena with points in the double digits. Center Jazimen Gordon racked up 10 points with five rebounds while Haleigh Lankster led the Shockers with 17 points.

Despite the loss, SMU collected 18 rebounds, making it the second most in a single game this season. Freshman Destynee Hives-McCray led the Mustangs with a season-high six rebounds.

Akil Simpson and Sabrina McKinney both collected six points during the game. Simpson followed behind Hives-McCray with five rebounds while McKinney was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line.

Next on the Mustangs schedule is a battle against Northwestern State at 7 p.m. on Dec. 5. This will be the first time the Mustangs have ever played against the Demons in the history of the program.
