Women’s soccer finishes off season with a win

The SMU Women’s soccer team faced the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricanes on Wednesday night at Tulsa. The match was the season finale for both schools.

Briana Gaines helped put SMU on the board first. In the eleventh minute, Gaines headed in a free kick from 40 yards out by Courtney Smith. The goal was Gaines’ fourth of the season and her third in the last two games. Gaines led a second half comeback this past Sunday against UTEP with two goals in the last 34 minutes.

The Mustangs went up 2-0 only eight minutes later when Olivia Elliot also picked up her fourth goal of the season on a punch from two yards out.

Then, only a minute later, the Golden Hurricanes answered when junior defender Claire Hulcer scored from 25 yards out.

The Mustangs finish the regular season with a 11-7-1 record and a 7-3-1 record in Conference USA. The Golden Hurricanes finish with a 10-7-3 record and a 4-5-2 record in the conference. Although Tulsa finished with a better regular season record, the Mustangs will be seeded higher in the Conference USA tournament, hosted by the University of Memphis from November 2nd-November 6th.

The Mustangs will be the third seed in the tournament and Tulsa’s seed is to be determined.
